Healthcare and Life Sciences

The Houston region is a flourishing locale for the life sciences, primarily due to the influence of the Texas Medical Center (TMC), which is the world’s largest medical complex.

The Texas Medical Center

Specializing in cardiovascular research and treatment (Debakey Institute) as well as oncology (M.D. Anderson), the Texas Medical Center (TMC) has garnered global recognition for its research contributions. Complementing this research base is a complex assortment of regional hospitals and treatment facilities capable of treating any condition. It is the combination of both research and treatment that make the TMC unique.

Pearland is located just minutes from the TMC and its 50 medical institutions, placing Pearland in a strategic position to attract research, treatment and health care support facilities. Pearland’s 77584 zip code is home to more TMC workers than any other zip code in Houston.

Benefits for life sciences and health care companies in the Pearland region include:

Access to Talent:  Currently over 13% of Pearland residents work in the health care sector.
Location:  Pearland’s location at the intersection of State Highway 288 and Beltway 8 has made the community a strategic choice for health care providers looking to serve our rapidly growing market.

Recent Life Science Projects:

In 2018, Lonza Houston, Inc. completed construction on a 300,000 square-foot manufacturing facility - the largest dedicated cell-and-gene-therapy manufacturing facility in the world.  The facility includes office space, process development, quality control laboratories and a fully segregated fill/finish suite and is scheduled to employ 200 by the end of 2018. The project broke ground in April 2016 as a 100,000 square-foot biotech facility on an 11-acre site in the Lower Kirby District.  In September 2016, Lonza announced an expansion to facility currently under construction for development of viral gene and virally-modified cell therapeutics for customers worldwide.

In 2013, Kelsey Seybold relocated its administrative headquarters to Pearland. The 170,000 square-foot, four-story office building is located on an 18 acre site in Shadow Creek Ranch on the northeast corner of Kirby Drive and Shadow Creek Parkway, just west of State Highway 288.  The administrative offices support Kelsey-Seybold’s 370 physicians providing primary care and specialty care at 20 clinic locations throughout the region.

Also in 2013, PEDC recruited Base Pair Biotechnologies to Pearland. This developer of biochemical components for new medical diagnostics and potential therapeutics relocated their office from Houston to a 1,300 square-foot office in Pearland’s Sunrise Lake Village.  In October 2017, the company relocated to a 5,000 square-foot office on Broadway.

In 2011, PEDC recruited Merit Medical Systems to Pearland.  The global medical device company opened a 92,000 SF research and development and manufacturing facility on a 12-acre site in Pearland's Lower Kirby District in October 2014.  Merit Medical Systems, Inc. is engaged in the development, manufacture and distribution of proprietary disposable medical devices used in interventional and diagnostic procedures, particularly in cardiology, radiology and endoscopy. Merit serves client hospitals worldwide.

In 2010, Saint Paul, Minnesota-based cardiovascular medical device developer, Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. opened its state-of-the-art facility for the manufacturing of commercialized interventional treatment systems for vascular disease.

Healthcare Developments in Pearland

Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) opened HCA Houston Healthcare Pearland, a 30-bed, acute care hospital in Pearland in February 2015. HCA Healthcare Houston Pearland is located at the southwest intersection of Highway 288 and County Road 2234 (Shadow Creek Parkway) on a 48-acre site that is currently home to a full-service, freestanding 24-hour emergency department, imaging center and a 3-story, 80,000 square-foot medical office building.

HCA Houston Healthcare Pearland is a 144,000 square-foot, $71 million facility featuring surgical suites, medical/surgical beds, intensive care beds, an emergency department, and an imaging department that will include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), catheterization lab, echocardiogram testing, and nuclear medicine modalities. The hospital’s women’s service provides digital mammography, labor and delivery suites, cesarean section operating rooms and a newborn nursery.
Memorial Hermann completed construction on a new medical campus in Pearland in 2016. The centerpiece of the new medical campus is a 4-story, 64-bed acute care hospital that features an intensive care unit, operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, medical/surgical units, women’s and neonatology services.

The multi-purpose complex is located on a 40-acre site that is also home to an outpatient imaging center, diagnostic lab services, and two medical office buildings.

The campus also includes a “one-of-a-kind” convenient care center, which opened in February 2014, that provides one-stop, highly coordinated access to adult and pediatric primary care, specialty physicians, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and a 24-hour emergency room.
